  1. When you are addicted to something, you crave that substance and so you light up to quiet your cravings. Your parents know it is bad for them. They will have to decide to quit and it might take a few times to succeed. I think you understand the lesson and will make better choices in your life. Good luck,

  2. It's a combination of two things:

    1. the actual addictive affect of nicotine (the drug in tobacco)

    2. the physical habit they have formed, often they go to it when stressed or anxious.

I will say that nagging smokers to quit pretty much never works.  Hopefully they at least smoke outside and not in the car with you.

Assuming you're an adult, if they do smoke indoors make it clear you won't be coming to visit as long as they smoke inside, and make it very clear they aren't welcome to smoke in your house.

If you live with them and they do smoke indoors, that's really unhealthy and in some circles could even get them charged with child endangerment as 2nd hand smoke can be quite dangerous to your health.  I'm not suggesting you call child protective services on them, but you might at least try to talk to another adult (ideally a non-smoker) who your parents trust.  They may be able to communicate the importance of not endangering your health.

  3. Nicotine is extemely addictive. That means that when smokers try to stop, they feel much worse than you have ever felt in your life. It is also a pleasurable drug so some people don't want to give it up, despite the health risk.

  4. nicotine addiction

  5. Mainly because nicotine, a major ingredient in cigarettes, is HIGHLY addictive by design.  Your parents bodies crave the chemical and they feel very, very bad when their blood-level nicotine drops.

That's why some folks use patches or other nicotine replacement devices and gradually lower their nicotine intake (and need) over time.

    Hope this helps!

  6. Its tough but if i could do it anyone can, I am in my 7th week and using patches helps, i have 5 weeks to go on patches and then hopefully i wont want to smoke any more.

  7. Because if I quit smoking, I would be a tremendous *****. I smoke for the sake of my sanity and for the sake of the others who have to deal with me. It's hard because after you do it so long, you NEED it and get very cranks and get headaches without it. It's also habitual as well. Sorry they won't quit though, I wish I could because I know my daughter would appreciate it in the future, but it is very hard, if it were as easy as what you just said I'd be done by now.
