Why r shannon and her mum being kept apart?

Is this normal, in a case like this, i thought they'd be reunited , why isn't the mum at the police station with her.

Shannon could well clam up tight if she thought that she was going to get her family into trouble.

Also it ensures that no outside influence can be brought to bear.
