Why rims and sound systems etc

Question

why do people buy these things. the way i see it is that you are destroying a good car making it look odd. also sound systems i think they are just annoying and don't know why any one would want one. not to mention the cost of the stuff. help me understand why people do this

1- rims are s**y, and they show off your paper.

rims is a part of making the car look like you want it.. being unique.. and for the system.. the louder the better!!

Personalization.  People buy rims to make a visual statement to their car and systems because they like loud, hard hitting music that their otherwise stock stereo cannot provide.

The answer your probably looking for is it gets people's attention.

rims...i don't go overboard...18's at the largest...nothing too flashy...something nice to compliment.

caraudio...well, i have been installing before i could drive and music, and listening to it at the best quality i can, is a passion of mine. i also compete in car audio competitions...i have tried to compete for sound quality, but competing in SPL is more fun.

if you just ask this Q to try and pi$$ people off....i do see where your coming from...kids and cars woth no sound deading, improperly power balanced systems and just plan old cars that rattle as they go down the road give enthusits like my self a bad name. thats not what it is supposed to be about. granted, you can probably hear my car a few blocks away when my windows are down, but with them up you hear nothing. i have investing just as much time and money into keeping the sound in my car as i have on the system it self....and it sound better than most clubs and concerts i have been to. my home system consists of many in walls and subs all using concert amps, x-over, and EQ's....the entire house sounds just as good as my car.

everyone has something to do as a hobby and to spend their money on. i bet you have something you do that most of us would ask "why" to also.

Both are ways to personalize your vehicle. To some people, cars are more than simple transportation; they are a statement about who you are and/or who you want to be. And for others, like me, simply enjoy better-sounding music (clear highs and midrange for vocals, and plenty of bass for rock and classical music). People like to tailor vehicles (or their house, TV, clothes, etc) to their tastes. Some are satisfied with basics, and others want more. It's just a combination of taste and priorities.

It's the same with anything. I don't see the need for graphite fishing rods with $500 reels and loads of tackle...because I don't enjoy fishing. My father, however, has a huge collection of fishing gear. I'm sure you have a hobby that you spend a good chunk of money on that would baffle some people. As long as you like it, that's what matters.
