Why search engines are not showing morethan 1000 pages?

For example, when you search for a keyword "cricket", total results are 86,400,000 ..but they are showing only 1000 pages.Why only 1000?

Well... it's to save space and not hog all the bandwith... i mean really... who looks at all 1000 pages anyways? it's more to optimize their searches.
