  1. For safety.

If the seat in front of you is reclined it makes emergency escape more difficult. It also makes adopting the brace position difficult/impossible. If the cabin fills with smoke it makes finding location by touch alone difficult. If all the seats are upright it also makes it far easier for the cabin crew to visually check that seatbelts are fastened, headphones are off, bags correctly stowed and not blocking the escape routes.

I could give other similar reasons, but basically take-off and landing are the times when aeroplanes are at most risk of crashing, so it's vital that sensible precautions are taken to ensure sppedy and safe evacuation.

  2. because if they were inany other position, you would  be snoring by the time the dam plane got up in the air

  3. to maximize space between passenger rows for safety.  The same reason you have to wear your seat belt during take off and landings... they are the most safety-critical flight manuevers when flying.

  4. Believe it or not, but the four inches do make a difference in the event of a crash landing (that is if the plane doesn't do a pile drive into the ground).  The guys on Mythbusters showed this on one of their shows on the Discovery channel.  It does not seem like it would make any type of difference, but it is the difference of a major neck injury and a head ache on a survivable crash landing.

  5. Ask Boeing...

They're the ones who make those planes...

Also...they can get more seats on board that way, and believe me (check my bio) your "seat position" is not a "safety factor..."

If the plane crashes...your seat position will be changing quite dramatically, and may come to even not exist...

    Okay?!?

(Not the brightest question I've ever gotten at work...so I hope this was "tongue-in-cheek...")

  6. The vertical position of a person will make the spinal nerves much harder to damage during take off and landing.....
