  1. Secondary metabolites are produced by the plants as defence mechanism.  The term secondary metaboiltes is misleading, as it indicates that it is a by-product of some system. Actually they are essential metabolites as they are playing an important role in the survival of the plants by keeping them free from various diseases, insects, pes ts etc. Curcumin  is a secondary metabolite which keeps the Curcuma plant rhizomes free from diseases.
