Why selling CESC Fabregas? Can it be a Blessing in Disguise!

Love never dies, and after years of flirting it’s finally time for the marriage of the season and perhaps with it the heartbreak of the season, its Schadenfreude, someone’s pain is someone’s gain, as it’s time for Fabregas to finally decide on his future and walk down the isle at Camp Nou.

Arsenal has time against them and it’s up to them how they would prove to the love-torn Spanish kid, that he has a brighter future at Arsenal and a better chance of winning silverware with his current teammates, which is more like proving there would be no sunset tomorrow.

At the age of 23 the midfield maestro feels that he has waited long enough and wants Arsenal to compete with the big fish in the market for the signature of the hottest commodities out there. Fabregas wants gunners to spend big and bring in players that can bring instant success but Arsene Wenger fails to comply to those wishes as he does not believe in that business model, so its almost certain that the Spaniard is set to leave rainy gloomy London and will be dancing to the tunes of Spanish music in sunny Barcelona come next summer.

But the situation is not all that glum for the gunners fan, one example I would like to quote is that of Juventus. It was the summer of 2001 and the old lady of Turin was contemplating on a third straight trophy less venture and failure in the Champions League that faltered at the group stages only. Came calling Real Madrid for the star name, Zinedane Ziadane with a massive wedge of cash. So what did they do? Did they hold on to their priced asset and appease their worldwide fans? Did they desperately try to keep a footballer, who was destined to be a legend and whose skills and mastery demanded a bigger and better stage, a mantelpiece full of accolades and medals?

No, they did not cling on to him and instead used the money from the world record transfer to buy Buffon, Nedved and Thuram. They took a team built around the skill of one man, sold that one man and bought the whole new spine of a team. And no they did not fall apart after selling their talisman, In fact they responded with two back to back Serie A titles and a champions league final in between.

The tale is noteworthy for Arsenal fans as before they are swayed by the ‘Arsenal in Turmoil’ headlines in the British media who would have them believe that the London club is just inches short of something as big as the Armageddon itself. How will Arsenal win trophies without Cesc? Excuse me but they were not winning trophies with him either.

Cesc is a wonderful player and there is no doubting the fact the he will be sorely missed at the Emirates but it is also a fact that selling your best players doesn’t always equates to the death knell. Manchester United sold Ronaldo and Tevez last season and still gave Chelsea a fight for their lives so there is still hope for Arsenal. Moreover there is no point in keeping a player who wants to leave, after all what is the point of having a flashy engine in a car with no wheels, instead sell the flashy engine and buy plenty of wheels.

With Cesc fetching around 40 million, Arsenal would be able to buy a good goalie, a defensive midfielder, a centre half, an attacking midfielder and Maruane Chamakh is already on its way and that to me sounds like more of a complete Arsenal.

So they may have to take this little step backwards in order to take a giant leap forward.
