Why serving on the jury often a financial hardship for some jurors?

  1. I am self employed.  I do not earn any money when on Jury Duty.  I still serve, but it does hurt.  If I had to serve on a really long trial it would really hurt and they would probably excuse me.  I've never had a case go more than 3 days though.


  2. Some people work for themselves, and lose money because they cannot operate their business without their presence.

    Some people have employers who do not compensate them while they are at jury duty.

    Some people work for minimum wage and tips; without the tips, they would not survive.

  3. Not if you work for the government.   You still get your full salary plus whatever the court gives you.

  4. Because most employers don't pay you while you are on jury duty. They only have to hold your job for you. The city pays jurors a small amount of money for each day they serve, but it doesn't come close to what they would earn if they were at work.
