  1. It doesn't have to be Champagne but I don't think a bottle of diet Pepsi would suit the occasion.

    It's just a ceremonial celebration tradition like toasting the bride and groom at a wedding or to ring in the New Year and what better way to do that than with a bottle of booze.

    I don't think we should go back to the days when the Vikings christened ships by performing a human sacrifice and putting the blood on the bow of the boat to appease the sea gods.
