Why should Fernando Torres not join Manchester City?
The transfer market is going wild this season. And the heart of all the speculations is none other than the world’s richest club, Manchester City. The club wants to hire every player willing to come to Eastlands and the most wanted player in their list is Fernando Torres. The Spanish striker has been linked for a move away from Liverpool, following their disappointing 7th place finish in the English Premier League.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini recently praised the striker’s talent, claiming the 26-year-old to be one of the best strikers in Europe. The Italian added that the player has been playing in the English Premier League for the past 3 years and has fully adapted to Liverpool’s style of play. Torres has the opportunity to ink a deal with Manchester City whenever he wants to. The directors and managers at the club are desperate to sign the Spanish, and would give anything to snap him up. If City can play 200,000 pounds a week to former Barcelona defensive midfielder Yaya Toure, they may well pay a lot above to the Spanish hit man.
If Torres does rent a home in Eastlands, Manchester City supporters may well see their club lift their first ever top flight English title since 1968. Torres would join the likes of Carlos Tevez, David Silva, Adebayor, Given, Barry and many others who are likely to form a formidable partnership. Many more signings are expected to materialise in the days ahead and Torres would certainly not regret wearing a sky blue outfit.
But Torres may well want to think through his decision. Manchester City doesn’t really value El Nino like Liverpool does. For Liverpool, Torres is oxygen. For Manchester City, he would be “just another signing” which was confirmed by Mancini who stated that, "there are two or three strikers that we could go for."
Torres may well have to give his all in order to compete for a starting spot against the likes of Tevez, Balloteli and Adebayor, who have performed exceptionally well. Any two of the four can be played, and Torres may well have to sit on the bench if he fails to find his form. In Liverpool however, Torres would start each match that he is fit to play which is why he is respected by all Liverpool supporters. El Nino is an icon for Liverpool, as he is compared with the likes of Kenny Dalgish, Ian Rush and Kevin Keegan.
If the 26-year-old moves to Manchester City, he would just be another big name at the club. Torres would lose his status with Liverpool and may well be booed whenever he misses. Torres may want to back his statement of claiming that Liverpool was his "only English club" which is why he wanted to end Liverpool’s 2- year title drought.
Roy Hodgson has displayed new hope at the club and with the signing of Joe Cole and many new faces, Torres may well stand an equal chance of winning the league with Liverpool. Torres may be the wild card for both the clubs, as whosoever he picks would most definitely stand a better chance of winning the league.
Torres would miss out on the loyalty of Liverpool supporters, and break the unique bond of its fans. If the striker leaves, he would ruin his relationship with the Red’s loyal, just like Michael Owen did when he left Liverpool for Real Madrid. It would be a similar occurrence and Torres would be throwing away a chance to give some elation to all the Liverpool fans by winning the coveted title.
The 26-year-old Spanish striker should commit to the Reds if he wants to have his name written in gold in Liverpool’s history, and wants songs about him sung at Liverpool years after his retirement. Torres is the guy who cares about such matters rather than money which would be the only thing that Manchester City would be offering the player. By joining City, it would be a shortcut to success and would be a part of a team who would be dubbed as “buying the title”. If it is the same Torres who left his boyhood club Atletico Madrid for Liverpool, he would want to remain true to his personality and keep fighting for Liverpool.
