  1. Because passing the first exam will show employers that you are both serious -- & have much knowledge beyond the scope of economics.  Plus I recommend it while your textbook knowledge is still fresh in your head, & you are still in the lifestyle of studying.

I'm looking to change careers & enter finance.  Through contacts, I have become friends with a top level manager.  After talking with him about what I need to be hired, he told me to pursue the CFA.  I'm competing with people with experience that runs around the range of: BS in Business or Finance, almost half with MBAs as well, & majority coming with about 1-2 yrs of work experience.  I have no formal business or finance education.  Everything is self-taught from reading & running my own business for the past 6 years.  However, just by passing the CFA level I exam, I was told that I am competitive enough to make the preliminaries -- & get the interview.

So... imagine your possibilities coming out with a BS in Economics & having the CFA level I to boot on your CV as well!  I'd be envious of you!  Good luck with whatever you choose.
