Why should I have to go to summer school

Question

I started my freshmen year of high school yesterday and my school put me in the wrong class. I should have been in Honors Algebra but instead they put me in intro to algebra, so I went to talk to counselor and he told me I would have to go to summer school to catch up with the rest of the honors kids. Why can't he just switch me into the right class?

weird i had honors to but passed math with A so they put me in geometry

well it depends on how you did in middle school because if u pass u will just be in algebra but if you past in advance you will be in honor algebra so you need to check your algebra grade in middle school i dont know what they call that big test you take near the end of the school year but we in virginia cal it the s.o.l. so you need to check your algebra score to see if its high enough to be a honor algebra class

He may not be able to switch you in because the class is already full.  Yes, there are certain numbers, as dictated by contracts, to how many students a teacher can have in a classroom.  

However, if this is the counselor's error I would suggest you speak to the department head (usually a teacher in the subject, in charge of scheduling and other administrative duties).  You may want to do your research first so you have all the right info; check your scores, make sure you have fulfilled the prerequisites, etc.

Also, I've never heard of "catching up with honors kids."  In my school students can switch levels at any time, as long as they have fulfilled the prerequisite course requirements and have grades to support the switch.  When they do switch, they don't have to go to summer school.  It is assumed that the student will have the drive to catch up, as needed, on their own.  After all, to be an honors student you have to have more than smarts, you have to have motivation too!
