  1. YES, you ARE being cheap!

Now, to answer your question -- because you are at a restaurant where someone is serving you.

  2. Because normally that person that brings you the food and refills your drinks every 5 minutes doesn't make much money and works their butts off doing it.

  3. besides all the great reasons listed above, in order for restaurants to be able to make money and still give great service, servers have a seperate min wage, that allows restaurant owns to hire more servers without have a big out of pocket cost for that salary.

Also it is a cultural thing.  In this country we tip for good service, no one is forcing you to do so,  and restaurants don't expect but as a society we do, and if you don't want to, don't but just remember that if you don't and you go back to the same place you will not get good service.  Servers talk and they will remember someone who doesn't tip.  Also if you are dining with someone(especially for the first time) it kinda says you are  cheap if you don't tip.

I don't know all the ins and outs of why tipping started but I do know it was started as an incentive for good service.

  4. A gratuity is for the person that does more than bring you your food, they fill your drinks, clear your plates, clean your trash after you go.  Bear in mind if you have any children with you, a few extra bucks on top of an ordinary gratuity is particularly kind after you let them throw everything on the floor, dump out the sugar packets and spill their sodas all over.

  5. A tip is considered a gratuity payment to the wait staff.  Generally waiters are paid 50% of minimum wage and then whatever tips they collect on their tables.  That's why it is so imperitive to be a good waiter, you are rewarded for your service and good attitude.  The price of the food is dictated by 2 venues, first the cost of the actuall ingredients, second the cost to have it professionally made by someone other than your mother or girlfriend.  If you go to a five star restaurant and feel that 30.00 dollars is too much to pay for a steak, then go back to Applebee's and enjoy your mediocre 12.00 piece of cow, but please, always tip your waiters.

  6. the price would be raised to off set the increase in wage the service staff would receive because they make less than minumum wage

  7. Because your server only makes $2 an hour!

Going out to eat is a privilege. It is a service! Just like when you get your car washed! If you wanted to wash the car yourself then you would not have to tip anyone! If you do not want to tip then go to a self service restaurant! Also known as, McDonald's! Or cook at home! Or get take out!

And, if you do not know how to tip here is a little bit of help...  Tip at least 20% of your bill.

    For Example:

    Your bill is $25.00. Tip: 20% of $25.00= $5.00

    Your bill is $50.00. Tip: 20% of $50.00= $10.00

    Your bill is $100.00 Tip: 20% of $100.00= $20.00

One last tip, NEVER be rude to a server! We know who you are, we remember the bad tippers!!! And you do not want to be on the bad side of someone who serves you something you intend on eating! GROSE, trust me!

  8. FIRST OF ALL I WOULDN'T HAVE A JOB LIKE THIS CAUSE IT IS SO UNDER PAYED. BUT IT IS OUR CHOICE IF WE WANT TO TIP OR NOT. YEAH SURE THE WAITER GIVES REFILLS, ASKS IF THINGS ARE ALRIGHT, AND THAT'S IT. IS THAT WORTH THREE TO FIVE DOLLARS? THEN SOME OF THESE PRICEY RESTAURANTS HAVE PLATES THAT COST MORE THAN $10.00 OR WHATEVER, THE TIP SHOULD HAVE ALREADY BEEN INCLUDED IN THE EXPENSIVE PRICE. IF THE REASON WHY WE FEEL PITY FOR OUR WAITERS AND FEEL OBLIGATED TO LEAVE A TIP, CAUSE YOU GAVE ME A REFILL, WHY DON'T THESE RESTAURANTS HAVE LIKE A FOUNTAIN DRINK CENTER, WHERE WE CAN GET OUR OWN DRINKS. THE RESTAURANTS SHOULD PAY THESE WAITERS, WAITRESSES MORE MONEY, AND NOT DEPEND ON THE PUBLIC TO PAY THE REST OF THEIR EMPLOYEE'S WAGES. THE ECONOMY IS GETTING EXPENSIVE, AND THESE EXTRA DOLLARS WE DISH OUT, ADDS UP. NOW IF YOU GOT THE MONEY, THEN DO WHAT YOU WANT AND LEAVE A TIP. BUT IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD IF WE DON'T. ME BEING CHEAP OR NOT IS MY CHOICE, WHO CARES IF IT IS AN AMERICAN TREND TO TIP. THESE RESTAURANTS JUST NEED TO PAY THEIR SERVERS MORE MONEY$$$$$
