Why should I turn my lights off for this green hour?

This is such a joke! In fact, I am going to turn ON ALL of my lights! I am going to fill every outlet in my house with every electrical device I own. I am also going to use my diswasher! I might even do my laundry then too!!!

I encourage everyone that agrees with me to do the same. If we work together, we can cancel them right out!

hah....well...there might be one thing wrong with useing all that eletricity...ur house might caught fire...but i dont see amy reason y sum1 would sit in the dark for an hour...just cause of that...

The purpose of Earth Hour is to make a statement that it is possible to reduce our dependence on energy and the amount of carbon we pump into the atmosphere.

You are absolutely right.  Just another mind game devised by politicians to make you forget about the real issues and prove that they can get people to do anything like mindless sheep.

Forget the fact that gas is over 3 dollars a gallon and rising.  We're going to focus on something totally worthless that only liberals, sheep and tree huggers will participate in.

This initiative is about as worthless as daylight savings time.

First of all, it is NOT a joke. Second, this act would LOWER your electric bills, even though you could alwas pay them twice their cost. Third, this would help us conserve energy, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other greenhouse gases responsible for Global Warming. If you haven't listened to your Science class, Global Warming is the increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere caused by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and CFC's (chlorofluorocarbons). The emissions of these gases through the burning of fossil fuels and the usage of CFC's are getting larger every year and it makes the condition of our planet real bad. The increase in global temperature would cause the sea level to rise (which would mean more islands sinking) and the amount and pattern of precipitation to  change. Glacier retreats, species extinction and increases in the range of disease vectors are also attributed to Global Warming. The Green Hour would help the planet reduce the causes of Global Warming and make the public aware that we could do something with it. If you would just sit there and do nothing about it, what's your use to this world? Please do not let your ignorance of Global Warming, Energy Conservation and concern for the planet affect other people's sense of responsibility by encouraging them to reject it (sorry, no offense, just saying). Would it even hurt you to turn off your lights to somehow help reduce Global Warming? People who are responsible and sane enough, please support the Green Hour to help the condition of our world.

Because it is not a joke. The impact will be minimal in practical terms but in promotional terms it may help more people realise that:

> in 42 years the human population will increase by 50% to 9 billion

> 96% of glaciers surveyed were reducing in size

> in the past century the total mass of vertebrates has halved whereas the total mass of humans has quadrupled

> if everyone used the same amount of resources as Americans we would need 5 planet Earths

> 15% of animals are threatened with extinction today, 12% of all birds, 20% of reptiles, 23% of mammals, 31% of amphibians, and 40% of all fish

> humans clear an area of woodland the size of Portugal every year

> there are 800 million cars in the world today and in 23 years China will have another 1 billion cars

> the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today is the highest it has been for over 750,000 years

No body knows what the effects will be. If you don't care then you may just become one of the new refugees: environmental refugees. No dishwasher will save you from that.

You do not have to do anything. The power company will not even see a blip on the watt meter!
