Why should 4 million who voted no in Ieland be able to hold back 400 million in the rest of Europe? Why is Irelan so undemocratic to allow a vote that stops the rest of Europe? Should Ireland leave the EU?

  1. we didnt decide what the rest of europe should do we were givin the choice by our government on what WE wanted to do. it has nothing to do with ireland that your government decided that the people of your country wernt getting a choice in the matter and therefor made the decision for you. so dont take it out on the people of ireland if u want some1 to blame maybe u should look a lil closer to home!!!

  2. What the h**l are you on about?

    undemocratic?

Ireland's the only country in the Eu that gave its population a vote on it, the population said no and if you have a referendum in basically every other Eu country chances are they would say no too.

The irish gave us a slim chance which we should exploit and push for a referendum ourselves which i believe that stuart wheeler is pushing for.

    bahhhhh

  3. Oh the lisbon treaty! WELL AS A VOTING IRISH CITZEN I will be the first to admit i voted NO!

We were giving no information on the treaty(well there was a wee book we could buy for 30e). And the leaflets we got were unreadable(and i do law in college!)

A yes vote would have meant ireland would have to legalise abortions made us vulnerable to nuclear power plants on our tiny island lost our neutrality minimised the amount of power we have within the eu made our laws powerless as the eu laws would havebeen superior and there was really no good outlines to us from voting yes.

    Our no vote:

keep Europe a Union and not an Empire.

keep Ireland a country and not a province of the European Empire.

keep our Constitution and our human unalienable rights.

keep our laws and our courts superior to the EU laws & courts (which will be made by the unelected).

    keep Ireland & Europe democratic

    keep our minimum wage.

    keep our low corporation tax

    keep Ireland's voting weight equal

stop this "self-amending" treaty from happening

protect us from indirect & direct EU taxes

Ireland was also under the power of britian for long enough(and Northern Ireland still is) People died for our freedom so why should we go back under the ruling of another empire?

  4. No, there is no-one holding anyone back, the rest of Europe is free to go ahead and do wahtever they want to do. And good luck too!!!! Im happy as a pig in muck in my ignorance!!!

  5. Perhaps they are just offering the rest of Europe time to think about a very important question.

I don't see how holding a legal vote on a question that means a lot to the Irish economy can be considered "undemocratic"

  6. No country that has been allowed a vote has voted `Yes`, this country would have voted it down too if we had been allowed a vote.

  7. Wish I could help you on this one, but don't know what the vote was about.

Those Irish are something else, you gotta luv em.

  8. Why should less than a thousand ministers and comissioners be allowed to do what ever they want to the lives of over 400 million people - whilst being untouchable? How undemocratic is that?

Well done Ireland, you spoke for ALL Europeans.

  9. hey dude, cause Ireland values their sovereignty and understands that the treaty is the kiss of death for Irish freedom. GO IRELAND !hmmm, shades of obama....

  10. get a grip and realise what your saying and actually do some research.the majority of europeans dont want this coming in and are thanking ireland because they dont have a chance to vote cause their governments think they know best.how can u possibly say ireland is undemocratic when in fact it is probably the most when it had a referendum??please do some research before you post.

p.s im irish and my vote was a resounding NO!!

  11. cause the irish are the cleverest out of the lot of us!

  12. They are not holding anyone back. Ireland was the only country with the courage to have a vote. If all the other 26 countries had a free vote you could well find the majority saying NO. That's the case in the UK but the government won't let us have our promised referendum because they know that it would be lost. It suits the government because they see only the personal opportunities and glory in achieving a higher income for themselves. MPs pay to rise to European levels.

Incidentally if the Lisbon Treaty is modified to suit the Irish then all the other governments who have ratified the treaty without their elector's consent, should have to ratify this revised treaty, preferably having a referendum for this purpose.

  13. Ireland is not stopping anyone.  It was an EU decision that if one member country rejected the treaty then it would be rejected by the community in its entirety!

If anything is un-democratic it is the grubby little politicians and bureaucrats who are trying to circumvent that provision who are guilty.

  14. Your wrong to say that Ireland is holding the rest of Europe back. Dont condemn Ireland because the Government there allowed a referrendum, unlike the rest of Europe who have pushed through the Lisbon Treaty reguardless of whether the people of their countries want it passed or not.

  15. Excuse me! – Ireland has done nothing wrong – in fact it allowed its people to have a democratic vote. This democratic vote should have been given to all the people of Europe as it is a major issue. It is people like Gordon Brown in the UK who denied the country a vote even after promising them a referendum on the issue. France and Holland already had rejected the previous version of the treaty. It’s the leaders of other EU nations and the EU autocrats in Brussels who are being undemocratic. So leave the Irish alone – if you must, have a go at the EU cretins who denied other 400 million their rights. It is those countries who don’t want or can’t respect democracy in Europe are the ones who should be leaving. Perhaps you would like to point this out to the leader of your country….

  16. Because it reflects what the majority of individuals believe!

  17. Ireland is not holding any one back in europe. the question should be Why did none of the other EU countries hold a referendum. It is because they know that a few other member countries would have had a NO vote. Well Done Ireland. I live in the UK and we where hoodwinked by our labour government, who said we could have a referendum vote then had the audacity to tell us that "we" and by "we" I mean our government said that we are backing it. So where the democracy in that. And now the French President and his merry band of followers are tyring to BLACKMAIL Ireland into forcing it people to vote yes or they will lose out on subsidies from the EU that France so greedily cling too. I don't know about Ireland Leaving the EU. I would certainly back the idea of the UK leaving the EU. This is of course Just My Point Of View

  18. Fair comment....but the rules (not set by Ireland) did ask for unanimity.

  19. It's because of the system of sovereignty and the way international law works.

There is no precedence in the nation-state system for a laws that supercede national laws, EXCEPT for international law. The problem is that it is very difficult (legitimacy-wise) for international law to apply to a country unless that country accepts it.

Thus, the EU officially built on a system of international law (the EU Treaties) which require unanimity from all member states to apply. The Lisbon Treaty is no different.

  20. I'm Irish, I voted yes and there will be a second vote on it. People in Ireland are moaning that the government aren't listening to the people and aren't respecting their decision but that is rubbish. The No vote was 53.4% with large numbers admitting that they voted no because they weren't properly informed on the matter and I can't say I blame them, the whole campaign was a shambles. However it is disrespectful not to have a second vote after a properly delivered campaign from both sides with the real facts. Listening to the people would mean the government have to do this for the people who voted no because they didn't understand.

However what you are saying is equally abhorrent saying that no country should have the right to vote no.

Enigmaticstargirl your answer proves the lack of information not only through your admittance of the fact but also in what you think a yes vote would have meant. It would have meant none of those things
