  1. Because they are the quickest way one can get an inkling of what's been happening during the last day or so.

  2. Newspapers gives a person a quick recap of the day's events in short time. It is also a good way to spend a bit of time relaxing. A newspaper goes hand in hand with comfortable furniture, snacks, and beverages. Therefore, it is a pleasure and information source.

  3. What, versus public life?

    Information

    Games

    Classifieds

    Obits

    Public announcements

    Stock quotes

    a counter question is,

Why not? I find that too many young people are oblivious to current events. A newspaper might not be the best way to get informed, as it sure takes a lot of resources to make the paper, and fuel to distribute it. Perhaps more should receive their  "news" via the internet.

  4. It allows them to have an insight into the day to day world, for example tragic events might make them feel better, stories might affect them (rising fuel costs) and interesting facts might give them something to talk about with friends - its the morse code's 100th Birthday today.
