  1. Why shouldn't they?

There is a misconception that large companies are, by definition, bad for everyone.  Bill Gates has used economies of scale to make computer software affordable and accessible to vast numbers of consumers, and which is compatible with each other (even Macs).  He and his wife donate billions of dollars to charities and support low priced software for teachers and students.

This is a big world, and small companies simply cannot meet every need of every person.  If "big companies" commit a crime, prosecute them.  But when they do something well, you should recognize them as well.

And before you accuse me of anything, I work for a non-profit healthcare organization, myself.

  2. Because they sell a product that a large number of people want to buy.

What do you suggest? Should Microsoft be limited to only selling a certain number of software packages per year? Should we force people to buy products made by other companies instead of the ones they want to buy?

One of the characteristics of the free market economy is that a product that is popular with consumers will sell well. It's not so much that someone "allows" this to happen -- it's just that nobody is allowed to *stop* it from happening.
