Why should gasoline in the US ever be below $3/gallon?

Hasn't the global demand increased beyond the point of no return? Hasn't the US been paying too little for too long. Simply saying you have to choose between driving and eating isn't sufficient. Perhaps you should have planned ahead and seen this coming.
