Why should kids have cell phone in school?

If you could tell me why kids shouldn't have cell phone in school too!

So they can cheat on tests, keep up with their drug deals during class, order pizza.

I can't think of a single reason for 99% of the people with cell phones to have them.  We got along a whole lot better without those electronic umbilical cords.  Children in school are the LAST people who should have them.

The should have them but not be alowed to use them during class and keep them on silent. They will be very useful in an emergency though such as a school shooting which we have alot of.

People who say they shouldn't are idiots and I have been a teacher. In 2002 a boy was murdered after school, his phone was confiscated and according to his friends he was going to ring his mom to get a lift.

Phones are needed for security, and I agree they should be off during school however allowed in school 100%.

I am a current police officer and the amount of kids whom are attacked on the way home who was going to ring their parents for a lift home is shocking.

If the government forces children to go to school then at least let them take their mobile phones, its not a prison sentence nor' a lockdown.

i,vie see the story about that problem on t.v talk show  some time ago ?   they said some student used it to cheat on quiz test or other take picture under dress !     kids get the bad wild ideal to used the cell phone from other kids own phone and start calling as a pranks !   another reason mostly is the d**n ringing everywhere in school ?

They should. How the h**l am I supposed to call my mom when I make plans with my friend during lunch to get picked up by her mom and spend the night at her house? How do I text my friend to let her know how hard the english test I just took was? How the h**l would I ever experience detention, if I didn't text in class?

Think of it this way; kids require a way to contact the rest of the world while they are trapped in a place that they'd rather not be. Otherwise they would go absolutly crazy.

I work in a school (law enforcement - school resource officer)... i dont mind kids having a phone at school, but agree with most of the posters that it should be off during the day....

it is definately a distraction during the school day.. kids are playing/listening to music/playing on the internet when they should be learning... they are texting questions/answers of tests to other students.. sending pictures taken during changing before/after gym class...

during the day kids have access to pay phones in the lobby or in the front office/nurse's office during an emergency.. heck, i let the kids use the phone in my office too... as far as lunches, etc...they need to do the same things we did years ago.. grow up and be responsible for themselves... they really only need them for after school...

2. They should not be using cell phones to arranging hook ups in hall ways or restrooms or using them to ambush other students.

3. They should not be talking to anyone outside of school. Gang activity.

They should because :

-If there's an emergency, they can easily call for help.

-If it's in their lockers and they decide to make plans after school, or they need to stay, they could easily call their parents and let them know + call for a ride.

-Sometimes cell phones provide useful things, such as a calculator, or a map. Not for a test or exam or anything, but this could be useful for homework.

They shouldn't because :

-During class it becomes a distraction (if it rings or if someone is txting)

-Some embarrassing pictures may be taken without anyone realizing (ex: in the bathroom) and then published on the web, or sent out, causing extreme humiliation

-If someone is on the phone and their is a msg on the intercom for them, they may miss it (sometimes the msgs are extremely important)

i carry mine in school all the time no matter what...so i dont leave it in my locker and then get i trouble :).....i take mine because i can call my mom if im goin somewhere right after school...and a reason they shouldnt because everyone at my school gets caught texting in the middle of class, and if u get caught u get it taken away. hope i helped a bit!

In case of emergency.  Have them turn it off during school hours (you can check if they did by calling the number, and if it go's straight to voicemail without ringing its off.)  But i beleive they should have it in case the bus brakes down, something happens in school (like they have a lockdown and cant leave after school) If they have to walk home and something happens.  etc.

Also, along with the easyness of cheating when you have a cell phone, cell phones also make a huge distraction. A lot of students could not have a phone on them and not text all day in class, since they can do it in secret. It's just that there are a lot of students who are not responsible and honest. They are the ones who ruin it for everyone else. Cell phones should not be a 'crime' in class. Unfortunately though, that's what they have become.

for me i have one because i get headaches all the time and they are pretty bad and my nurse is stupid and just gives me a bag of ice and makes me call my mom and do all this g*y stuff when i can just text her bring me meds. because i cant just call her from the front office i have to go to the nurse and if i need to know whos picking me up or tell her im staying after school its quick and easy and i dont have to intrupt her at work.

School is for learning.  Cell phones are for recreation.  

Kids do not need cell phones in school, although I have no problem with a kid having a phone in school for emergency situations.  Any adult who can be talked into giving his/her kid anything more than a MINIMAL cell phone to have at school has rocks in his/her head, and needs to turn in their "adult" credentials, because they were obviously issued to the wrong person.

Actually they should even though they are a distraction. Something important could happen and they might need to call someone. When I was in my sophomore year of high school, there was a fire and the whole school had to be taken outside. My dad was actually the first one to text me to see what was happening b/c he just happened to be on the same street as my school is on.

I think it's a good idea to have kids carry cell phones in school (I'm a mom of one of those kids who is 12 and in the 6Th grade) .. with all the school shootings that are going on now a days. If anything should happen in school any one of those kids can phone 911 and tell them what's happening.    

Why shouldn't' they?   Mostly it's a distraction.  They can text message their friends so on and so forth.  

But i let my child carry a cell phone in school because she walks home.  I want her to be able to phone some help if called upon when she is walking home.  

Does the positive outweigh the negative..you betcha    I want to make sure my child is safe.    Now if they start to use their phone during school hours when it's not necessary...do what my child's school does...take it away from them till the end of school and they have to pay a $15 fine

It's up to them but I think they should. I don't think they should be kept on them in lesson time because it's distracting but if they're kept in their lockers and used at lunchtimes or only in emergencies then I think it's a good idea. They may need it to call family about getting picked up :]

It's good so that they can get in touch with their parents or in case of emergency. However, there should be a rule that the phone be shut off and they cannot, under any circumstance bar an emergency, be allowed to use it during class time at the risk of having the phone confiscated and a fine be levied.
