I am going to apply for nursing school shortly and I was wondering what truely is the difference between these degrees. Is it just the factor of wanting to become MORE than an RN or am I missing something? Less school and the same degree sounds better to me.......post opinions and knowledge please!

  1. You will be limited if you want to get more specialized assignments or promotions, but you don't need a BSN at first just to get started in nursing.  You can work on the BSN later.

  2. Only those graduates with a BSN will be given the title of RN once they take and pass the state or province nursing license board exam. ASN degree takes 2 years, offers less pay and respect than those with a 4 year BSN degree. You don't have to start right away with your BSN. You could go ahead and get your ASN, work for a bit, then bridge your existing ASN into the BSN program at a university or local college, which will take another 2 years.

  3. Hi, I am actually just starting nursing school, so hopefully I answer your question! My cousin told me the same thing: that an associate's degree will get me a nursing job right away and that I should just go for that.

But if you think about it, the hospital will most likely want someone with four years of knowledge as oppose to the two years you get with an associate's. If I had an associate's degree with a nursing job and someone with a BSN applied for a job, they could easily take my position.

Personally, I think you should just go straight for the BSN instead of going for the associate's and then getting a job and then finishing school later like the other person said. You're already in school anyways; why stop? Might as well go through the whole four years and then spend the rest of your time focused on your job.

So in the long run, a higher degree such as a BSN will get a better paying salary and will more likely get the job than a person with a two year degree even though you can already get a job with an associate's.

  4. My sister started out with her associates in Nursing and worked on her BS while at the hospital, and is now working on her PhD
