You know, I've done this once. And my answer may surprise you, but I did it because I wanted to live in freedom. Freedom from a repressed, Victorian society, freedom from the unrelenting onslaught of merciless commercialism, freedom from the pressures of a high-strung society where everybody has a gun and is ready to use it, freedom from a place where a government has the right to kill people only to demonstrate that the poulation does not, and freedom from a place where everybody is lurking like lions in the underwood to sue somebody for all they're worth. I am sorry if I sound like I am knocking America, but the fact is, as long as the country isn't aware of how extreme it is, it'll never be the great nation it so longingly wants to be, and can be if it tries, I have no doubt. Until then - I won't be seen there.

This of course depends on personal preferences. I can give you some specific advantages and disadvantages of Germany, and everyone has to choose if it is worth it:

- Germany has a rather high level of regulation. Street signs are everywhere and they show the correct direction. Towns look nice because they regulate what may be built and what may not.

- Germany is a neat and clean place (however, if this is a VERY important point for you, you might also consider Switzerland). Everyone has several trash cans to pre-sort his own garbage.

- In Germany, wages are high, prices are low, and you have a rather long annual vacation. So you can keep up a high standard of living. IF you have a job, that is. Not easy at the moment.

- Germans are mostly correct, rather stiff, hard-working people who keep appointments and work for quality.

- As every nation, Germans have one domain where they run amok. What Americans do with guns and the British do with food, Germans do with cars. They use them as a means of releasing their bad energy by putting them on the autobahn and racing like there is no tomorrow. Combined with the high level of truck transportation on German highways this makes the autobahn a dangerous place which is not for everyone.

- In all other respects, Germany is a safe place with rather low rates of crime and corruption.

- Germany offers fine beer and wine, all sorts of food you can imagine, natural beauty and variety, fine architecture, high levels of culture, science, technology, and commerce, and friendly, sober, reliable, modern and moderate-tempered people.

- The weather in Germany leaves a bit to be desired, but this depends very much on the actual place where you are. And we hope for global warming.

I am from Germany and live and work right now in the US.

To compare the two Countries,there are Worlds apart.

Health care- Both Countries have their troubles but you get better cared for in Germany, as a Health care Professional of course you have the here the better Pay- thanks to lower Taxes.

Stores are longer open , well that is finally changing in Germany,

Organic Food cost here more than in Germany.

The Negative one is the Guns, their should ban them, the "Fens" their like to build down South ,do keep the Illegals out,reminds me at the Iron Curtain we had in Europe.

But overall you can make a Living in both Countries,even Germany is more expensive.

People here in the US are more Conservative and religious then in Germany and do not tolerate that much then we do in Europe.

I will return home to Hamburg,Germany in a few years, but always will return for a short term.

So if you have never left the US , try to take a chance and go to Europe,Germany or any other Country in Europe, you will discover a whole new world.

Culture change!  I'm planning on visiting Germany this summer.  It's a lovely place with great culture and awesome people.  Make sure if you do go have enough money in case if its not your thing.  Everyone is different but to me its like my 2nd home.  Im a German-American and my love of Germany is about the same as here.  Deutschland Uber Alles!

Because sometimes there is just so much someone can take from their home and they feel the need to start fresh and new.  I am planning on moving over to Germany just as soon as I finish school and will never look back.  I have lived there once before and visited numerous times, and never once did it feel old or uninteresting.  I could always get things accomplished and had more confidence.  The people I also found to be a lot nicer and more open than the average US citizen, and less full of themselves and hurtful.
