Why should someones background be checked before choosing a Vice President?

For what purpose is it. If the person is a Politician, then we already know that they're a liar and couldn't make money by doing honest work. I applaud Ms Palin and the Liberal Republicans because i think they finally trashed the Conservatives forever.

I can't remember exactly, but the dems had a VP candidate 25 years ago  or so that was not investigated very well and the press found out he had been in a mental hospital a decade or so before.  The dems had to replace him and was one of the reasons they lost the election.

They have been much more careful since.

I'm still scratching my head over McCain choosing her on such short notice.  One h**l of a gamble, or pure foolishness?

I hope you are right, but McCain may have gotten the entire anti abortion evangelical movement behind him with this pick. It will be seen as a brilliant choice if he is elected.
