  1. she/he doesn't need to know specifically what their status is, but it will help a teacher in planning assignments or holding classrooms discussions. You don't want to assume every child knows what it's like to visit the beach.. alot of children believe it or not have never been to the beach. Even children who live close to one, so you have to be sensitive in teaching something or having a student make an image of something they have no knowledge on or experience with.

  2. She doesn't have to know it, but has to be sensitive to it.  If all of her examples involve country clubs and polo games, and her students come from working class backgrounds, they won't be able to relate to what she is talking about.

  3. Check out Ruby Paine's "Culture of Poverty".  All children learn differently, but wealthy children are exposed to a lot more (art, music, traveling).  As opposed to children who come from less fortunate home where they are in survival mode 24/7.  I am not saying that wealthy children are loved more, but their parents have the means to expose them to so much more.

Also, you have to keep in mind socio-eco status when sending home assignments.  If you are working with kids who come from poorer homes they might not have access to as many materials or the internet.
