  1. Well it's all a front.

  2. The reason we care about what goes on in Georgia is because of Russia, really. After the Cold War, it's not as if we just shook hands and everyone forgot about the situation. In fact, you could say we never ended the Cold War, it just got a lot more subtle.

But when Russia starts invading old satellite countries, it looks bad, and brings back memories of the 60's 70's 80's and early 90's.

people don't just forget about that kind of stuff as though it never happened.

  3. a threepeet of world war

  4. it's exciting and a good photo op for the friendly nieghborhood americans.

  5. It is our tax-dollars building missile bases in every one of the countries in that area. The weapons that Russia was running around destroying, after they kicked the Georgians back out of South Ossetia, were supplied by US tax-dollars.

South Ossetia and Georgia had a treaty to allow South Ossetia to remain independent of Georgian rule until they could resolve their differences. Georgia broke that treaty when they attacked them. During this period Russia was allowed to maintain peacekeeping troops there to protect the South Ossetians. They were being overseen by two international observer groups (OSCE is one - Org for Security and Cooperation in Europe)

Your question is a very good one! why are tax-dollars being spent to arm countries that are adjacent to Europe not the US. Also the pipelines and oil in those countries is going to Europe. Not our business.

  7. Not a conspiracy-based answer, but a very real answer: there is a major oil pipeline in southern Georgia that connects many western countries (most notably the US) to a major oil reserve.

There are 2 pipelines that connect to that reserve. One runs through Georgia (and three other US-friendly countries) and the other runs through Russia (not exactly US-friendly).

A takeover or destruction or incapacitation of that pipeline would force the US to deal with the higher price charging Russians.

It is in the best interest for the average US oil consumer that the US maintains relations with the group of four (Georgia included) rather than Russia, or it'll be another reason why gas prices rise.

It's not a reason why _you_ would care, but it's a reason why the US is even bothering.

  8. Because we in the US care when a bully invades a smaller country.

We do have people in our country that need humanitarian aid and we also try to help these people too.

  9. World War II.  That is the best answer I have.  In WW2, the world was tired of fighting and didn´t decide to react to Germany´s aggression until it was too late.

Also, the USA has been quite happy about the dissolution of the Soviet Union.  Now it looks like Russia wants to regain its old glory and possibly create a new empire.  (They threatened Poland today.)

  10. georgia is an important ally of the US and the west.

and yes, nato (against the importuning of the US) refused to let georgia join and as soon as that was announced..... yaboom here come rooshans.

of all the nations with troops in iraq, georgia donated the 3rd highest number.

isn't this a hideous example of WHY the us needs to become self-sufficient in oil?

people in america DO get humanitarian aid, if the BILLIONS spent annually on social programs is any indication.
