Why should we eat from the lower part of the food chain?

This is a homework question, so only serious answers please. I believe that answer has something to do with expended energy.

For starters.. since we're at the top of the food chain, we have to eat stuff lower than us or become cannibals.

But beyond that, the lower down the food chain you go the more efficient the food source is.

For example the calories/energy of the plants a cow eats during its life is far larger then what you're going to get back from it.

It takes 15kg of plant food to make 1kg of  meat.

So, it is less economical to consume meat.

for this question- we should refer to the tropic level and food pyramids concepts. the lower trophic level (lowest is producer-plant and the highest is top predator) the higher the energy in term of mass. when the energy is flow through the food chain- the energy is loss by heat. you can refer to 2nd thermodynamic law. that's why the trophic level in pyramid shape. but if u refer to ecology text book (by miller), they do not recommend this idea- eating at low trophic level (so i dont know why u got this homework). why? because when we (human) primarily rely on plant as food, we need bigger and bigger area for crop which will disturb our environment as well. ad as the top predator, we actually minimize the other predator abundance.
