  1. There have been many inovations over the years to create tougher and stronger polyethylene materials so they can make packaging materials with thinner gauge. End results, the bags we have today are much thinner than the past. The driver was not so much a environmental issue but more from the lowering material cost standpoint. It's possible they can develop thinner bags but usually the ecomoics for bags are not there to allow the converters to use the best materials with today's technology.

  2. The tare factor comes into play

    ... . ....

When people start to drop all their merchandise in the parking lot cause the bag is to flimsy to carry the articles in the bags

    .. .. ..

Well you will have a new line of customers at the service counters won't you

    ... ..

  3. Strength.

Try putting a some normal shopping item in a thinner mag. The eggs (or milk) will fall out and be smashed or split by the bag of spuds!

Handles stretch and break on thinner bags!

Thinner bags also puncture easily from corners of cartons and then more shopping falls out of the holes while you are walking to the car!
