Question:

Why should wealthy help the poor and give to charity?

Normally wealthy people worked very hard physically and mentally to attain their wealth...

So why should they hand their dough which they sweated their blood and tears to get to someone who does nothing with themselves?

Even if I one day have over a billion dollars I'm still not giving a single cent to a homeless man, however, a struggling student with potential I may help out..

But for anyone else... no chance.

  2. Charity doesn't mean you have to give to an organization.  Give to family members that you know are in need of help.  Make a scholarship (depending on how rich you are) for the local schools.  When you meet someone who needs help financially, help them out.  I'm poor but I have always been known to work hard.  I even have a degree, but I've had troubles using it as an advantage where I live.  I don't ask for money no matter how poor I am.  However, sometimes I ask for someone to throw me a bone.  That is, maybe help me get a job somewhere.  All they have to do is help me get the job, I actually do the work and do my best to be a model employee.

It's your money, you don't have to give it away just cuz people say you do.  However, if you want to be nice, then look for people who need it.  There's always someone out there who needs money for car repairs, clothes, food, etc.  Sometimes just a few bucks will pay their heating bill for a few months.  Best of luck.  Don't kill yourself working too much!

  3. What kind of poor are you talking about? The poor person in America working 3 jobs at minimum wage and still living bellow the poverty line poor? Or the poor person in say, a country destroyed by poor politics and no functioning economy poor?  Maybe the poor child who grew up in a drug addict home, but a child that did not choose to be there? Maybe the poor mentally ill man that sleeps homeless because he doesn't know any better...

The term 'poor' is broad and relative.

Then again you defining rich is pretty simplified too... some people are born into money, some people get their money through corruption and theft and drug dealing... how is that any more deserving than the poor?

There are no rules to unilateral wealth redistribution, but not all 'poor' people are lazy bums who do nothing all day and not all 'rich' people work with blood, sweat and tears like you imply.

  4. I've been to Africa and seen people work harder than I'm sure you or I have ever worked in our lives!  They've walked miles for water, to collect firewood, grew their own food, cooked on open fires outside, had no electricity (and therefore no washers or dryers or irons or vacuum cleaners or toasters or microwaves or ovens, etc etc etc).  Despite working from morning until night, they were barely surviving and often going to bed hungry.

So why should you help the poor?  Because you can!!  What a privilege to be able to!  Because you were lucky to be born where you were!  Because it feels good to be able to make a difference in someone else's life!

I feel sorry for you that you are so judgemental to think that all homeless people where you live are not deserving.  Do you know that most people are only one paycheque away from being homeless?  Sometimes it is circumstances beyond their control that temporarily leave them homeless.  With some help and encouragement, they could again have a home and be a contributing citizen.

May you never be in any need and if you are, may you be surrounded by people that think differently than you!!!

EDIT:  And when you worked these 60 hour weeks was it throughout your ENTIRE life?  And when you walked all those miles did you have shoes?  And when you got home did you actually have a home to go to?  And food to eat?  Or was your belly swollen from lack of food?  And did you have clothes to wear or were your clothes tied together to keep them on because of so many holes?  And when you needed medical help were the doctors you could go to?  and hospitals?  Now who exactly are you calling foolish???

  5. People should be willing to help one another no matter how much or how little monitory means they have but they must be willing to work and do for themselves and not be dependent on others.  Some seem to think that society owes them a living and they should lay upon their bottoms and not do any thing. Then some just hit a streak of bad luck but are willing to work for whatever to get themselves back up again .

  6. They owe it.

Do you think they got all they got because they are so perfect, so brilliant, etc?

Was there not some luck involved?

Well, many poor people are poor not because they are lazy, or stupid (Although stupidity is a legal handicap -- or do you just want to shoot all the non-mensa?), or whatever.  Some have had bad luck.

Helping out is the waelthy person's  chance to "pay it forward".

Also:  They get it all back.  How?

Well, tax credits for one.  For another, poor people spend most of their money on survival goods and services.  And wealthy people own all the firms providing those goods and services.

Then too, even the wealthy can be brought low.  And they know this.  So they help out, because they then know they will get help if they stumble.

One word: Karma.  I think everybody gets the implications.  What goes around, come around.

For another reason:  They can afford to.  It is the same reason they buy race horces, sports teams, and climb Mount Everest....

And as for helping a stuggling student with potential, how would you recognize one?   Henry Ford was first viewed as a crank.  Michael Dell and Bill Gates started out in their dorm rooms.  And many people told them they were nuts.  I could go on and on...

And as for not helping a homeless man, how do you know that HE might not have potential?  Many great and wealthy and powerful and famous men went through such phases.

I take it you want to be rich some day.  I also take it you are young.  And from your question, well, you have a few rough corners.

Time to get your own potential going:  Slack off some of that prejudice and ignorance.  I would expect thast if you did so, we can then expect truly great things from you in the next 25 years!

We'll be watching.  And I predict that some form of Yahoo Answers MIGHT just survive that long for you to report back.

  7. If you don't care about anyone else then you can just ignore the need and suffering of others. But if you have more than you need, maybe you would want to help others.

  8. Because they are the ones with the MOST Money. If I was RICH I would donate to ALOT Of charities. They could do some good in the world instead of buying themselves Big Toys.

  9. being a muslim i know that God has given someone money and someone poverty.Being a rich person anyone who help someone he actually perform his duty not being a Muslim,Christan or Hindu but for the sake of humanity. He actually satisfy his soul.

  10. Your basic premise, that wealthy people are wealthy because they worked harder and better than someone else, is flawed. It's true in some cases but not most cases by any means. Wealthy people often are wealthy because they were born with advantages other people didn't have, because they have used or exploited other people, or because they are willing to break rules and work in shady or illegal businesses.

Your accompanying assumption, that poor people are poor because they are lazy, stupid or incompetent, is also not generally true. For the most part they are people who have suffered misfortune, have illnesses or otherwise weren't dealt a fair hand in life.

It sounds as if you think you are better than other people because you have earned more money, but if you have more money than someone else it means you've been fortunate, have been helped, and have  hoarded your blessings instead of sharing them.

Best of luck, I think you need it.

  11. You said you would help out a struggling student. That is charity. Everybody who gives money to charity chooses who or what to give to. And if you had a billion dollars you would probably give more, too, cause you'd need the tax write-offs.

  12. there are plenty of people with real money who help the unfortunate you just keep wishing you had real money not to give cuz your in the same boat not having something to give

  13. Not everyone who is poor, homeless, etc., got there by choice. Bad things do happen to good people. There are plenty of people out there that are 1 paycheck away from being homeless. The majority of people on food pantry lines are the middle class who just need a little help towards the end of the month, not the homeless. They still make too much money to qualify for food stamps or any other kind of assistance.

I'm not saying to just give money to a homeless person that's on the street, it's just that wealthy people should give back and remember where they came from. Especially the self-made wealthy.

Where were the wealthy during Katrina when people were stranded for days with no food and water? This country and Americans will give and give to other foreign countries. When a fellow American needs help, it's a "help yourself" mentality.

If I were wealthy, I wouldn't have a problem helping people to help themselves.

  14. Because it's fun.

    :D.

  15. While I am not wealthy I do give back. I give my time. I am a volunteer tutor at the School on Wheels, a learning center for homeless children in Los Angeles. There, I help children with their homework and just take an interest in them. I was raised with the saying, "If you give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day but if you teach a man to fish, he will eat forever". Therefore, I also help adults find work, proofread resumes, etc. Not all homeless are lazy. Some escaped abusive marriages, some did not plan for the cost of living when they moved out here.

I also work at major sports venue where they give out coupons for free food when the local professional basketball team scores 100 points and holds the opposition to less than 100. When someone on the street says they are hungry and I usually have some of these, I give them to the person.

  16. You have a point there. How about the sick people?
