  1. Well, when you reach for your cellphone while driving you pose a risk to get into an accident. In many ways you can get distracted, you may feel the need to check your text messages and even text back. Have you ever seen the after effects of texting while driving and getting into an accident. It isn't pretty. So basically, have a clear conscience when you reach for your phone.

  2. People shouldn't be reaching for anything while they are driving. Your attention is diverted from your #1 responsibility, driving. You could hit the steering wheel and be driving off the road or into other vehicles. You could hit the accelator and speed up. If you have to stretch to reach the cell phone then you shouldn't do it. Pull over in a safe place or wait until you reach your destination. People did ok long before cell phones were so popular.

  3. Because cell phones are not part of driving a car, take your eyes off the road for a minute and you are putting everyone on the road at risk, chances are if you were reaching for it and you dropped it, you would go after it, then what. Cell phones do not belong in a drivers hand, the steering wheel does at all times. There should be a device in the cell phone that shuts it off when it is in a moving car. Pull over on the shoulder or a rest area and stop the car, then use the cell phone. I have seen more stupid things happen on the road and guess what the driver is doing. Is the call really that important that you risk an accident? I think not.

  4. In the United States over 254 million people subscribed to such wireless communication devices as cell phones as of February 2008, compared with approximately 4.3 million in 1990, according to the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association.

Increased reliance on cell phones has led to a rise in the number of people who use the devices while driving.

There are two dangers associated with driving and cell-phone use, including text messaging.

First, drivers must take their eyes off the road while dialing.

Second, people can become so absorbed in their conversations that their ability to concentrate on the act of driving is severely impaired, jeopardizing the safety of vehicle occupants and pedestrians.

Since the first law was passed in New York in 2001 banning hand-held cell-phone use while driving, there has been debate as to the exact nature and degree of hazard.

The latest research shows that while using a cell phone when driving may not be the most dangerous distraction, because it is so prevalent it is by far the most common cause of this type of crash and near crash.

  5. It's a distraction, especially in heavy traffic. It's also a distraction because you might be wondering who it is, what the call might be about, etc.and you aren't thinking about what you are doing......driving a vehicle in traffic!

It can also cause loss of control of your vehicle because you are REACHING into a purse or a back seat to find it......because that's when it usually rings, right? You might also be just about to turn when the cell phone rings and might cause you to grab it while turning and may lose some control of your car, especially in dual turning lanes and might miss someone coming straight through when you are making a left turn.
