In a small but famed area of London, a new train station is being built. The area is currently called Shoreditch, with historical connections to East London and the City of London, Spitalfields fruit market and the Columbia Road flower market. It straddles Petticoat lane, Bishopsgate and the entrance to Tower Bridge.

In the middle of the area is Brick Lane, once famed for tailoring and an all night bagel shop, now famous for a series of curry houses and late night bars. It is the area that supported gorgeous George Galloway for MP.

Brick Lane has a vibrant Bangladeshi community, who are proposing that the new train station be named Bangla Town to reflect the local community.

Do you think this is right, does it truly reflect the local community or do you think that local history is more important, and can you think of a better name ?

  1. It's a stupid name. No other tube station is named for what is in the area, they are named for where they are. e.g. Covent Garden is in covent garden, leicester square is by leicester square, etc etc and so on.

Call it shorditch and leave it at that.

We could always change Kingscross to the Red Light District , or picadilly to busy tourist trap.

Stick with names of places that way we all know where it is, as there is no place called Bangla Town then it shouldn't be  call it. Lets hope common sense wins on this one.

  2. There is an inherent problem with naming relatively permanent installations according to communities that may or may not be living there at the time.

Should the Bangladeshi community move on then the name would become a nonsense. Statistics from as early as the 1200s show that communities often drift from areas that may have once been considered permanent or a strong-hold.

I don't think it should be called Bangla Town, because the Bangladeshi community has not been there for any length of time in comparison to the length of time the area has actually been existence as a thriving part of London - it's almost the equivalent of changing the name of Oxford Street to Primark Boulevard

  3. I think that the people that live there make up the community.  Maybe its too ruff, to much violence, etc.

Local community is much more important.they are the ones makeing changes.

the rough crouwd will only make things worse for everyone.

  4. No. Just because there are lots of bangladeshis living there, why should we change the name?

  5. Southall in West London has a community where the majority of people are from Asian backgrounds. There are numerous other areas of England where this is true also. Are we going to rename all of them?

Perhaps Golders Green could be renamed Jew Town.

  6. Have to change the nursery rhyme

Oranges and Lemons said the the bells of St. Clements

You owe me five farthings said the bells of St. Martins

When will you pay me said the bells of Old Bailey

When I grow rich said the bells of Bangla Town!!!!!!!?????

    It'll never catch on!

  7. I don't think they'd be so quick to rename a station in respect of Britons don't forget it's a privelge for them to live here
