Why shouldn't you refill plastic water bottles, such as Poland Spring bottles?

No reason not to do so at all.  Works all the time for me.

So long as the contents of the bottle are for personal use, why shouldn't you refill with tap water and carry it along with you ? Poland Springs , Evian and others would prefer that you purchased another bottle and recycle the old. More sales!! More Profit!!

Because bacteria remains in the water bottle from when you drank from it the first time around.

There is a concern that plastic releases toxic chemicals with extended use. It is the same reason that plastic should not be used to microwave food or beverages.

It has lots of gross bacteria and can cause some health problems.

I've done it for years with no problems.

the chemicals from the plastic bottle seep through and the bacteria doesn't get washed out or steralized when you keep refilling the bottle...
