Why shouldn't you take a protein shake while nursing?

I'm trying to get back and shape and my husband recommended drinking a protein shake before I exercise. the label says 'not intended for pregnant or nursing mothers' why if it's just added protein?

  1. Because the companies that make things like that (as well as medications) haven't tested them on pregnant or nursing mothers. It is a total CYA move. They don't want to be sued.

Because the proteins added might not be good for baby.  For example, if your baby has an intolerance for a protein in cow's milk and they include that protein in the drink, the protein (or a close enough version of it) may show up in your milk and cause the baby problems.  (Chicken egg allergy is the other main problem.)

    It's basic legal butt-coverage.  If you currently drink cow's milk and eat chicken eggs without an adverse affect on the baby, you'll probably be able to drink the energy drink.

  3. You wouldn't want to because sometimes there might be added hormones that you don't know about.  Those extra hormones may be bad for the baby.
