  1. Hair is produced by a skin organ called the follicle. The follicle is a group of cells which form a pocket, which produces the hair shaft. It is the width of the follicle that determines the width of the hair. There are also oil glands in your scalp which secrete oils which coat the hair when you brush it frequently. The brush quills start by grabbing oil from your scalp and then spreading it along the length of your hair.

    Part of the state of your hair is genetic. Part of it is how you treat it.  

    Narrow, thin, hair can be caused by the collection of a chemical called DHT or dihydrotestosterone inside of the follicle. This is a male hormone by-product. The DHT collects in the follicle and makes it narrow, which makes the hair shaft thinner and weaker. This is what causes male pattern baldness in men, and in some cases women. When the follicle dies, then the person becomes bald in that section of scalp.

    One natural technique to have beautiful long hair is to brush it frequently after shampooing it, using long even strokes. This spreads the skin oils along the hair.

    A hair treatment you can get at a beauty salon is a hot oil treatment. This replaces the oils lost by frequent shampooing and exposure to the sun and wind.  There are also many shampoos on the market with additives to add protein to the hair, add body to the hair, etc.

    Women also have the luxury of wearing beautiful wigs. If you look at certain models and movie actors, they wear wigs a lot in public. It is all about their image.
