The sun produces energy which is projectected out in all directions.  A small ammount of the energy is hitting the Earth everyday in the form of heat, light  and other electromagnetic radiation.  This light is used by plants in the process of photosynthesis, and the plants store that energy in the form of sugars and starches.  Plant are the base of our food chain, so all life on our planet is reliant on the sun.  Ancient life forms died and there leftovers got barried underground and eventually became all of our fossile fuels (coal, oil, natural gas, etc.).  In other words fossile fuels are all stored solar energy.  The only energy we typically use that didn't come from our sun is nuclear.

Currently, we are taking a more direct approach at using solar energy by creating solar cells to harness the sun power more immediately.  A photovoltaic (pv) panel consists of a number of silicon cells connected internally in series. When light (electromagnetic radiation) reaches these cells electrons are caused to drift which produces an electric current. This current varies with the size of individual cells and the light intensity.

The generation of electrical power from sun light usually refers to the use of solar cells. Solar cells converts the sun's photons into electrical energy (usually via the absorption of photons in the solor cell's semiconductor material to produce a current flow that can do work).  Satellites in space usually get some or most of its electrical power this way from their solar panels (of solar cells).
