How can anyone oppress a language?

I don't think much thought went into this question.

You can, maybe not speak your native language within another country if you know the language of the country you are in, but that is only being polite.

And most people like to be polite.

Well, I am interested in other languages but I find the Arabic alphabet very confusing. Actually, my boyfriend does study Arabic along with Spanish and also Portuguese too. My boyfriend loves Arabic and loves the Arabic alphabet but it looks too hard for me to learn!
