  1. So that stupid people who think dogs are vermin don't kick up a stink.

  2. This is a great question and gives a person something to think about.

Not all blind people are totally blind. Some are legally blind meaning they can see a little at a very close distance. An example of a legally blind individual is the Governor of New York, David Paterson. He is New York's first ever legally blind governor. Governor Paterson does not use either a see-eye dog (Guide dog) or a cane.  The reason he does not is because when he was a little boy and kids saw him with the cane they were very cruel to him and would jump him. Nice kids and how proud their parents must have been. The governor is totally blind in one eye and has limited vision in the other. This is known as being legally blind.

The Guide Dog sign on the outside door of stores is so the public knows the Guide dog is allowed by law.  No other animal is because of health and probably other reasons. The Guide dog is the eyes of his/her owner and they are trained for the many tasks that they do. What amazing animals they are. They can go anywhere with their owner.

No, the Guide dogs cannot read, we know that. But, the blind can and have been taught to read in Braille which is a system of writing for the blind. I do not believe the signs are written in Braille so my guess is the man or woman knows ahead of time which stores have the signs. Safety must be kept in mind so stores with narrow passageways and stores with construction going on would not be safe for these gentlemen and gentle ladies with their Guide dog. I'm sure there is a list for them. The elevators in my building have the floor signs in numbers (Arabic, 1,2,3, etc.) and in Braille and you will find Braille writing in many places.

This is just my interpretation of why the signs are there. I'm sure if someone from The Lighthouse is on this website they can give a better explaination. Thank you for a very interesting question.

  3. It's telling dog owners of dogs that are not guide dogs, are not allowed. Its also telling others that they may come across a dog in the store.

Some people thiink they can take their dog anywhere, because its small or well behaived. And some people dont like dogs and some are scared of dogs. Its common courtesy, I think.

  4. To let people know that ONLY guide dogs are allowed. Not all dogs.

  5. ive never seen that

  6. This is for those people who bring in little Penelope, who then proceeds to piddle and p**p everywhere

  7. It's to let people who can see know that guide dogs are allowed.

  8. The signs are for seeing people who think all dogs should be barred from stores and restaurants. I think it legally covers a business when someone complains.

  9. When the dogs are being trained.

  10. the only reason i can think of is this:

not all guide dogs guide completly blind people and also it is more for other people - too make sure they don't complain there is a dog in the shop.

but it is a valid point
