  1. it is stupidity.. a free pen you take from the bank on accident writes the same as a $1000 pen from the store...

Its all about the look... pull out a 1000 dollar pen and it shows you mean business (only other people that know you mean business even know that pen isnt a 5 dollar pen)

  2. Same reason some automobiles cost $15,000 and some cost $90,000. There are always people willing to pay more for something they think is prestigious.

  3. some they charge that because of the material the pen is made of, some it's the company name you are paying for, and ten there's the space pens which actually use a specialized ink that isn't really ink it's more of a solid than liquid and can write in any situations, including underwater

  4. Yes,  Mont Blanc pens have gold tips and are supposed to impress anyone who sees you use one.  At some time in your life you have to get one of the expensive ones and see if it has a "magic" effect on your writing.

  5. prestige. vanity. "look at me" kind of thing. Celebrate success in life item.

Though many are hand made in the high end price range. Some are quite collectible. Some are quite intricate with wood inlays etc. Though the end product is the same. It writes.
