  1. First off.. not all servers earn only 2.33 or even less then minimum wage. Many places pay good money for good servers (some places here in town  that are NOT even "fancy" pay well over 10 bucks and hour.. PLUS tips)

I don't think using the wage is an excuse.. if I only was paid 8 bucks and hour for a job I would get a new job.. that pays what I want.

I was a server for 3 years working for my family restaurant for NO wage and I lived in a town of 2000. I got paid plenty.. had plenty of tips and what I didn't get off one table was DEFINITELY made up for by the next.

I don't think anyone automatically deserve anything for doing their job. If they don't like their job.. they need to get a new one. A tip to me is like a bonus in an office situation you need to work for it.. earn it and be happy that you got anything at all.

Foreigners aren't stupid like Americans.. they don't feel sorry for people who do their jobs and they don't complain like Americans do... that would be my guess as to why they don't tip as well. Granted.. my white American butt doesn't tip if it's not warranted and unless its exception they never get more than 15% (I think I've left more 30-40 dollar tips at Claim Jumper because their service IS exceptional)

  2. Because they are ignorant to the fact that us servers make so little and because they have never worked in a restaurant before.  I wish that everyone who goes out to eat would be forced to work in a restaurant for a few days, then they would understand the value in tipping.  But since that is not reality unfortunately, we just have to learn to live with it.

  3. I agree.. My stepson is a waiter going to school,. My wife was a server 30 years  ago when she was going to school and she tips less than I do.. I believe good service requires a good tip.. I hear stories from my stepson of people coming in and spending 100.00 or more and under the required amount of people at that table to require the tip be attached to the bill and they will walk away without tipping. Where my stepson works.. they are required to pay tax on their estimated tips.  He makes good money, but not enough to live in California

  4. Kipsee -- $2.33  is your hourly wage.   A lot of people do not tip -- the reason being is they don't want to tip.  I personally have over heard conversations between servers of making over $100 in one night.   Now I have worked a long time and I pay income tax on all that I was paid.  Servers do not pay tax on their tips.   As a server your job is to do the best that can be accomplished without complaint...

  5. Many people aren't aware that servers only get that much per hour and even more don't realize that servers get taxed for the entire amount of the meal whether they receive a tip or not.

I always tip at least 15 percent unless the server is rude or too lazy to refill my coffee.

Foreigners tend to not tip more often because the servers get paid more in other countries and they are just not aware.  I personally know someone who doesn't believe in tipping (a white male by the way) and he can't understand why none of the waitresses want to wait on him!  Duh!

The public needs to be educated to the fact that a waitress is losing money if they don't leave at least a 15% tip.  My daughter gets an actual paycheck of $20 every 2 weeks for waitressing.

  6. I would only tip if I had exceptional service. Usually the figure is around 5-10% of the bill.

I believe that in America they take the tip anyway in the bill whether you have had good service or not.

Certainly in the hotels that I have stayed in in America, a "service fee" is taken, this is the tip. I get most annoyed at that scam.

I have refused to pay it on a couple of bad hotels that I have stayed out and they have called the police in and I have been ordered to pay.

1 was in New York and the Other was particularly bad in Maryland.

  7. they are only doin their job just like me. i am a support worker and don't get tipped for my work. so why should i tip somebody else?

  8. People that don't tip are CHEAP!!!, period. There is no excuse for not tipping. If you are a foreigner, well i have this to say to you: when in Rome..... People are ignorant, and don't understand that tipping is taxed and is shared with the bussers. People think that you should get a "real job", too bad for them if all the servers in the world decided to get a "real job" and they could not go out to eat, anywhere, ever. But don't worry about it, one way or another people will pay. If enough  people don't tip, then the prices of the food will go up, and mostly likely their service will suck, as the servers already know they won't tip, and will have no motivation. People do not understand customs, and complain that servers get tipped, and they don't. what they don't understand, is that servers who are not being tipped, are more like slaves then employees. Way to set us back 100 years, non-tippers! Servers can not live below minimum wage in this country, that is why it is called MINIMUM WAGE! I never not tip when i go out to eat, if my service is lacking to the point that i decide i would not tip this person, i get a new waiter, and tip that person. Also, i leave a note with the manager. But that has only happened to me once, most tI'mes im more then happy to tip, because i know they are busting their *** to get me my food. a big thank-you to all the servers out there!!! Keep it up!!

  9. Oh wow they may not have alot of money

  10. Speaking as a foreigner, tipping is not the norm in many countries so they don't tend to think of doing it elsewhere.  They believe that staff are paid at least the legal minimum wage and that as they have paid for the food, that should be the end of it.  Paying for the service would be down to the owner of the restaurant - without the servers, the restaurant owner would not be able to attract customers.

Saying that, I personally DO tip for good service.  But I think that the question really should be "Why don't the establishment owners value their staff enough to pay them a fair wage so that they don't have to rely on tips?"
