Why sometimes when you hit things e.g. a tv it makes them work again

Once in a while that does work.  It is usually when there is a lose or intermittent connection inside.

I think the real reason people usually do it is because it feels good to hit the TV.  It is like a stress reliever.

Just a guess but there may be a short in the wiring and the bump might be connecting it again. Than again it might be many other things.
