    The tarnish on Copper is composed of mostly Copper oxide and some Copper sulfide. These compounds both react with dilute acids and dissolve (to be rinsed away).

    Most chemicals which are acids taste sour when placed upon the human tongue. Lemon juice, vinegar, and even spoiled milk all have acids in them and taste sour


  2. It has nothing to do with the fact that is sour, but it is the citric acid in the lemon that cleans the copper, and many other metals as well. I hope this helped.
