Question:

Why standard wirehaired dachshunds are so rare?

Everyone (including breeders) are favoring the "minis" now a days with wirehaired dachshunds. I want a standard (can become 30 lbs if allowed to) and I cannot hardly find one to save my life. Is it hard to breed these dogs?

  1. I think its really a good thing that the Wires, particuarly Standard Wires are not popular.  They are still a fairly healthy variety of dachshund.  It seems to me, that the majority of people who do own them either show (conformation) or hunt.  It is not hard to breed these dogs, you can find them, you'll just have to do some homework.

I think the Standards have fell out of favor, the mini's tend to be very popular.  I live in NYC and I never see Standards of any variety anymore.  Personally, I like the Standards better, I just feel like I have more dog.

If your looking for a Standard Wire, I suggest you visit the Dachshund Club of America website  http://www.dachshund-dca.org

also visit the North American Teckel Club website  http://www.teckelclub.org

The Standard Wires are excellant as blood trackers (hunting wounded deer).

As for your dogs "nasty" couse black & yellow hair...it sounds to me like your dog may have a "correct" coat.  The hair should be course and "rough".  If the hair is banded with "yellow", then you may have a Wild Boar color, which is very common coat color/pattern in Wirehair Dachshunds.

Do you handstrip your dog or do you have him clipped at a groomer?  Learn to handstrip him yourself, you can pick up a video.  Handstripping will improve his coat texture.  Clippering a Wire Dachshunds coat changes/ruins the coat, clippering causes the soft undercoat to grow over the harsh guard hairs, thus losing the coats waterproofness.

IF your dog tends to be fuzzy (my old Std Wire Dachshund was a very fuzzy dog) then get the Mars Coat King 20 blade, it will pull that dead undercoat out in nowtime with very little effort.  It's a wonderful tool.  You can get one at PetEdge  http://www.petedge.com

BTW, I own a Standard Wirehair.  He's 3 1/2 years old and just full of himself.  His breeder, who lives near by, is the only other person I know in the area who not only has Standards, but who has Wire's.

  2. No it isn't hard to breed them. A lot of breeders of many different dogs target older adults because they supposingly are the ones with the money. The majority in our areas, not all, but the majority, of people that buy dachshunds are mostly middle age and older that are looking for a small dog they can physically handle. It is extremely hard for them to pick up or even hold a 34 lb lap dog. I don't know where you live, but wirehairs aren't very popular around here. I don't know why but the smooth short coats are ranked way up there in Carolianas. We have a lot of Tweenies in this area that get up to 14 lbs. My standard girl, the sweetest best behaved doxie I have ever seen, is smooth hair and weighs 28 lbs., my mini adults are between 6 1/2 lbs and 10 lbs. Males are usually broader and heavier than the female. I have never physically seen a wirehaired doxie except in pictures. I see them listed for sale just a few miles up the road. The long coats don't do well around here either. Many end up in the shelters because of their shedding. Its a shame, but unfortunately that is the way it is.

  3. No, they aren't any harder to breed than other Dachshunds.  It's just that most people seem to prefer the smaller sized dogs.  Personally, I think the standard sized wirehaired Dachsies are the most handsome.  If you're in the USA, go to www.akc.org and look for breeders in your area.  There is bound to be someone out there somewhere!  If you're not in the USA, then go to your country's kennel club website and have a look there.  Even if you can't find a standard wirehair breeder, contact the other Dachshund breeders and see if maybe they can refer you to someone.

  4. Breeders favor the breeds that people like to own.

Small, smooth dachshunds are popular for many reasons.

It's no harder to breed standard Dachshunds than it is to breed miniatures. But few people want them these days.

  5. Not really that rare but people are favoring the minis.

They seem to go in cycles.

Google dachshunds rescue for Arizona and New Mexico.

One of the ladies involved in it also breeds wire hairs.

She has some really nice dogs.

She has a very cool standard blak and tan wire hair male who is one of the best looking dogs I have seen.
