Why such differing views about the name of the greatest Personage in the universe? ?

While the creation provides powerful proof that God exists, it is silent about the name of God. In fact, we could never know God’s name unless God himself revealed it to us. And he has. “I am Jehovah,” says the Creator, “that is my name.”—Isaiah 42:8.

God’s unique name, Jehovah, occurs nearly 7,000 times in the Hebrew Scriptures alone. Jesus Christ made that name known to others and praised it before them. (John 17:6, 26) That name is found in the last book of the Bible as a part of the expression “Hallelujah,” meaning “praise Jah.” And “Jah” is the shortened form of “Jehovah.” (Revelation 19:1-6, footnote) Yet, many modern Bibles seldom use that name. They often use the word “LORD” or “GOD,” written in all capital letters to set it apart from the common titles “Lord” and “God.” Some scholars suggest that the divine name may have been pronounced Yahweh. His name means “He Causes to Become.” Jehovah God thereby identifies himself as the Great Purposer. He always causes his purposes and promises to become reality. Only the true God, who has the power to do this, can rightfully bear that name.—Isaiah 55:11.

Unquestionably, the name Jehovah serves to distinguish Almighty God from all other gods. That is why that name appears so often in the Bible. While many translations fail to use the divine name, Psalm 83:18 clearly states: “You, whose name is Jehovah, you alone are the Most High over all the earth.” During his ministry, Jesus Christ taught his followers: “You must pray, then, this way: ‘Our Father in the heavens, let your name be sanctified.’” (Matthew 6:9) We should, then, use God’s name when we pray, speak of him, and Sing praises to him before others.

So what is the meaning of Jesus' words at John17:3,6,25-26 ? Please some one answer me that has some Bible knowledge..

  1. The Dukes of h**l, they come !

Arioch, help me, or my Life is done!

  2. Regardless of whether God exists, what does it matter what you call him?

  3. The "torture stake", the word "Jehovah"; blood transfusions; and the 144,000. The 4 main bones of contention and controversy for the Jehovah Witnesses.

  4. Throughout the Bible, Jesus (God) refers to himself through various names, each revealing an attribute of himself towards us; he is our healer, our supplier, our salvation, our lawyer (in the final court), our God, our friend, our protection, our avenger, our father. When he appeared to Moses in the burning bush, he summed it up by saying, "I am" (everything you need). The revelation of the names of God releases faith in us to receive specific blessings.

  5. Its a mess is it not? Something I found interesting as well. The other day I was watching the TV show Monk. I love it by the way. So, this one took place on a submarine. Monk was scared and trying to solve a murder in which he did. My awe is this. The admiral said to Monk he was the killer of course. " Do you know why this was a suicide? because I said it was. On land I am the Admiral, on this submarine I am the Lord God almighty, Jehovah". Please if you get a chance, watch it. And for those that have on demand. Its showing there too. So, funny that so called christians don't want to use the name, fighting to have it removed from the bible. Yet a TV show, uses His most wonderful Name...Jehovah God.

  6. WHAT GOD’S NAME MEANT TO JESUS

God’s “name” is also important to Jesus Christ. Just before his death he prayed: “I have made your name manifest to the men you gave me out of the world . . . watch over them on account of your own name which you have given me . . . And I have made your name known to them and will make it known.”—John 17:6, 11, 26.

We are not to believe that when Jesus said, “I have made your name known” or “manifest,” he referred to only the pronunciation of the divine name. His listeners were Jews who, reportedly with the exception of the high priest, did not know the pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton, the four Hebrew letters making up the name. Then, how did Jesus, by more than pronouncing the name correctly, ‘make God’s name known’ to the apostles? Note the answer given by one noted Bible commentator:

“The word name [in John 17] includes the attributes, or character of God. Jesus had made known his character, his law, his will, his plan of mercy. Or in other words, he had revealed God to them. The word name is often used to designate the person.”—Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Gospels by Albert Barnes (1846).

So, as Jesus ‘explained the Father’ by his own entire perfect life course on earth, he was really ‘making God’s name known.’ He demonstrated that he spoke with God’s full backing and authority. Jesus could therefore say: “He that has seen me has seen the Father also.” God’s “name” thus took on greater meaning to his early followers. Accordingly, an appreciation of it and the Personality that it stood for should be reflected in every aspect of the Christian’s life.—John 14:9; 1:18; 5:19, 30; Matt. 11:27.

  7. Oh, I thought you were talking about me....

  8. My understanding is that there is far too much human influence in the book to call it reliable; however, Jesus constantly stressed a personal, more intimate relationship with God, preferring to use the name "father" over the traditional "I AM".  He was trying to make us understand that God is truly more interested in us over the formalities of religious rigmarole.

  9. People make so much noise about us not knowing the exact pronunciation..... yet people "mispronounce" the names of other things without caring.

"Japan", yet the Japanese call it Nippon

"Finland", yet the Finnish call it Suomi

"Moscow", yet the Russians call it Moskva.....

Yet when it comes to "Jehovah" instead of YHWH, suddenly we need the "exact Jewish pronunciation" or nothing at all!!!

Let's be honest, the main beef people have with the name is because it is as tightly associated with the JWs as cocoa is associated with chocolate cake.

  10. ~~~Jesus' prayer in behalf of his disciples~~~ John 17:1-26.

In prayer Jesus acknowledges to his Father:

    "This means everlasting life,

their taking in knowledge of you,

    the only true God,

and of the one whom you sent forth,

    Jesus Christ."

Having finished his assigned work here on earth,

Jesus now asks to be glorified alongside his Father

with the glory he had before the world was.

He has made the Father's name manifest to his disciples

and asks the Father to watch over them

'on account of His own name.'

    He requests the Father,

not that they be taken out of the world,

but to keep them from the wicked one and

to sanctify them by His word of truth.

Jesus broadens out his prayer to embrace all those

who will yet exercise faith through hearing the word

of these disciples, "in order that they may be one,

just as you, Father are in union with me and I am in union with you, that they also may be in union with us, in order that the world may believe that you sent me forth."

He asks that these also may share with him in his heavenly glory, for he has made the Father's name known to them, that His love may abide in them.---17:3, 11, 21.

The light conflicts with darkness~ John 12:40.

And, then, those who (for whatever reason) refuse

  12. There was no "J" in Hebrew.  Thus no Almighty one who speaks Hebrew, will have a name with a 'J' in it.  YHVH entered Mary to be born YAHOSHUA, the Savior.
