Question:

Why such pessimism about the United States?

It seems there are so many people here that are angry about this country. Are you going hungry? Have you lost you job? Is the unemployment rate at 15%? Are the people rioting in the streets? Think about all of the opportunities and "things" like cell phones, computers, cars, HDTV, the vast variety and abundance of food, clean water, trash collection, uninterrupted power and so many other things we take for granted here. I have lived in other countries and I believe we have it better than most here. We are free to elect officials to help do things we can't do and are free to practice religion if we so choose. So why tear this country down?

  1. Right now the Democrats must portray these as our worst days so they can win an election.  Sad isn't it..

  2. Yeah, the old "hey, it could be worse" argument. People should want their country to be as great as it can be - not "OK".

Added: Which then leads to the a) love it or leave it! or b) You aren't a "real" American if you think things need fixing! arguments.

Ha! See Ilitrt for my point - wow, that was fast!

  3. That's what "sells papers", so to speak. Sad; time was, victory in our country did so, but now journalists aren't happy unless the country is sad.

  4. Rob.... Traditionally you find that it is the liberals that tear this country down . They do that so that when they put people in such a state of despair on how awful things are they will then set themselves up as messiahs who are going to make it all go away magicaly .. Usually via large government programs and high taxes..

  5. Republicans want all those things to happen than only they will leave country alone.

  6. For the first time in over 200 years, our children will have it WORSE off than their parents did.

Is it a fluke? Or a disturbing new trend?

Only time will tell -- and by then it may be too late.

  7. A lot of the anger comes from frustration with the absolute refusal of some to see the obvious problems in this country and their resistance to addressing those problems. When we sit back and pat ourselves on the back for our successes, we begin to stagnate and even lose ground to other up and coming countries and even regress.

Frustration results from the fact that we actually have the ability to address some of these problems with some vision and willingness to put in the effort. We have great resources in this country in terms of material things and people but we seem to have reached a point of inertia and that is not good for any country.

There is definitely room for improvement and to pretend that there is not is very short-sighted and detrimental to our long-term well-being.

  8. They are America haters. Yes, there is such a thing.

  9. its because liberals are running things now
