Because they eyes need constand moisture. Every time you blink, you re-wet your eyes. So it's natural that when you cry, the tears would come from a place that already produces water.

Okay, I know what some others will say... If we shed water when we are sad, then why don't we drool or pee when we're sad? I don't know.

Tears are designed to wash away any unwanted dirt or foreign particles from the surface of the eyeball. The tears bring the dirt across the front of the eyeball and away down the face.

If you are in Chennai...it's May...it's in the middle of summer hot and sweaty with all the dust and pollution.  That's why!!  I nearly lost my eyesight...thank goodness for sunglasses.  Do you have a pair? They really help!
