If you think gas is only 3 dollars a gallon you&#039;re in for a shock. The United States subsidizes the oil industry to keep the prices low. So you pay 3-4 dollars at the pump but don&#039;t forget that your tax dollars are going to Exxon, BP, etc so they don&#039;t charge the true price. So, even tho the oil industry is reporting record profits we still send them our tax dollars. In Europe, they are paying 2-3 dollars per liter which doesn&#039;t sound so bad unless you happen to know that there are 4 liters in a gallon equalling about 10 dollars a gallon. The main reason the government (all of them, not just Bush) wants to keep prices low is because they know we would not tolerate anything more than $5/gal and would abandon the woefully inadequate American auto market and go towards the more efficient Japanese cars and the much, much better hybrids they offer. So if you want to stick it to the oil industry and Bush, just use less gas. You&#039;ll reduce the money they make, keep more for your self and who knows? you just might do something good for the environment at the same time.
