  1. On the contrary, the supposed pagan culture and religion get along fine in Singapore. It's a matter of perception, it's not considered paganistic to the people in Singapore or anywhere else for that matter.

It's only considered paganistic when you're of another religion and can't agree with the practices. Singapore is a more religiously and racially tolerant place.

  2. Please do not try to talk about things that you don't even know about. Festivals such as the Hungry Ghost Festival and Qing Ming has been passed down from generations ago, from as long as anyone can remember. These festivals are our own ways of paying respects to the dead and asking for blessings from them. The Chinese in Singapore, though largely westernised, believe that there is a need to keep such traditions alive. I'm Korean-Chinese, but my Chinese mother and Korean father have always worked hard to keep old traditions alive. What's wrong with the whole pagan culture thing? It's not hurting anyone; that's the important thing.

So before you want to ask such a sensitive question, please go do your homework. Don't sow discord among people . And as for you asking such a question, it makes me think twice about you.

  3. As you said, its a CULTURE, it just past down from generation to generation. Chinese are conservative after all, some just simply following the tradition from their parents. But I can see that the culture is slowly fading away as time goes by.

In the old days, people tends go to religion facilities to seek/consult something that they don't understand or when they are helpless, something they don't understand simply could means work of deities/gods. Therefore, plus the priests acted as medium convey the "messages/words" for improvement. To commoners who are not or less educated, they simply wants a solution when they faced problems. Whoever can provide them with solutions, that person/thing will become his/her saviour. In the above case (olden days), most of the time is their deities/gods. Hence the belief remain strong.

Younger generations usually opt to seek something else. This is because they are more educated today due to society advancement. They are taught scientific theories, literature, laws and etc in schools, not in a religion facility. When they need help, they go to their mentors and teachers, not to the priest anymore. All in all, nowadays, younger generations are taught to analyse and trained to find real reason/cause whenever they can. Therefore, religion culture/beliefs is no longer so strong as before.

If you observe carefully, religion cultures are handed/past down to younger generations evenly for all races. This don't only happens in chinese community, its all over the race and religion (eg, islamic, christianity, hinduism). We don't or seldom see a muslim converting to other religion right?

Nevertheless, all religion emphasized on doing good deeds and spare a thoughts for others, but final "religion" destination can be different. No one is wrong to seek for whatever that brings peace to their minds. But first, we have to learn to respect others to calm ourselves down before we analyse others.
