  1. Its because of the rotational axe of the earth relative to the sun.

  2. The Earth's tilted on its axis in such a way that the North Pole is almost constantly facing the sun and the South Pole is facing away at such times, resulting in the 6-month-long ( or however long it is ) period of sunlight/no sunlight.
