  1. It's not really a monarchy, more a constitutional monarchy.

  2. Clearly in my lifetime I have seen the popular royal family in general decline in the public eye.

Ive believed for many years the queen will be the last monarch as we know it-

    Bless her baubled crown

She has given her life to the cause -

    which I admire her for-

But I cant see any modern prince or princess doing the same

    and giving up their life

  3. Not sure, but "If it aint broke............!"

  4. It's a bit like a woman having a rear view mirror. It's of no use to her but the car just wouldn't feel right without it.

  5. whats thew point in there not being one?

    well?

  6. lets face it they are britains favourite tourist attraction.who else would pay for the tat they sell in tacky tourist shops.,but the japanese and americans.i know theyve never done a hard days work in their life, but it is kind of nice to belong to one of the few countries in the world that still has a monarchy.

  7. Technically, here in the UK we don't 'need' a monarchy, but the Queen, or reigning monarch is important to a lof things - she opens and closes parliament, hands out the honours to those who have done good in our country and so forth... also, the monarchy here in the UK earn us a lot of money in tourism... Americans in particular seem to have a real thing about our royal family and it persuades a lot of people to come and visit London and the rest of beautiful England... So all in all, although there isn't really a 'need' anymore, they're still a rich part of our cultural heritage and still function and do a lot of good, although a lot of people in the UK are against the monarchy remaining... so I guess your answer is that we don't, but that they're not going anywhere for now...

  8. We don't. They just use up tax payers money to go on holiday and to have tea with presidents around the world. And that tourism excuse is a load of c**p as they only bring in just under 1% of the total revenue that we get from tourism.

  9. we dont need one, we just have one thrust upon us so that we can pay them for al their holidays and trips - sorry that should be so that we can pay them for all the work they do in promoting the Uk

  10. If we got rid of the monarchy we would still need a head of state, so why not keep the monarchy?  It's either that or yet more tedious elections.  Personally, I'd rather keep the Queen.

  11. Having a monarch stops Tony Blair or Gordon Brown being head of state.

    QED!

  12. I watched the BBC doc over Christmas, about the family business, and you would be really surprised on what they do for us.  The queen, feels its her duty to thank the people that we never get a chance to.  Prince Andrew works hard with UK business and brings in very large contracts to the UK.  The world really respects our royal family and monarchy even if we don't.  I know people will bang on about how much they cost - but it works out at about 64p each person in the UK per year!

  13. I feel that any sentiment that I may have added has been expressed, and well at that.

All that is left to say, is that I feel really quite moved and proud at the resounding note of pride in, and respect for our Royals.

It's easy to just say "bloddy waste of money!", but is there not so much more to it?

    Nice one guys!

    Good Brits you are!

  14. they are no longer a monarchy. they have elected officials. the royal family is just held in an elite position for traditional reasons

  15. Because its the only thing in Britain that isn't multicultural left.

  16. no country needs a monarch, but a few have them for tourism

  17. Well, if you were creating a new country, you wouldn't create it with a monarch.  However, the situation as it is in the UK is not a bad one. After all, the monarch is a constant in a changing political landscape, and there's really something to be said for that.  Removing the monarchy might give a greater semblance of democracy, but I'm not convinced it would improve anything; it might well make things worse.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Edit: Trickytrev: how is the Britsih Royal Family not multicultural!?
