  4. Because they're insecure. Over compensation anyone?

  5. U.S. is more well rounded... and winning in more events than just Gymnastics, unlike China.

  6. They don't, they suck in soccer!

  7. what the h**l are the Olimpks?

  8. because the NY times is going by all of the medals gold silver and bronze but i think that china is just about tied because they have 3 times the amount of people as the US also in the US we are trained to think that we are the best even though we aren't always

  9. It's OK. China has more golds. You're right. The USA has more total. See if however you want to see it. I don't care.

  10. The US has a lot of money to spend on trainers.

  11. The USA does not think they are the best in everything, but they, like China and every other country being represented in the 2008 Summer Olympics would love to be the best.

Who doesn't strive to be #1?

  12. I'm an American and I could care less about the Olympics.

Though even I know how to spell the OlymPICS.

Then again i also think the invade on Iraq was bull.

    So you see?

Not all of us Americans think we are "the best".

I am going to say that i DO have pride in this country, but doesn't everybody have pride in one's own country?

    xx

  13. What an original question.

  14. It is all related to the power of a country.   US was a most powerful country in the world in the past.  So people have been used to think by this way.  They can invade to other country with an ungrounded (or fake) reason.  It is very dangerous to keep thinking this way and not healthy to a country's growth and development.

  15. wow, an American news paper reported on how well America is doing.............

  16. A newspaper doesn't speak for the whole country bud.  Don't hold the entire population accountable for a graphic in a private newspaper.  You were probably looking at a total medals count listing. If it was a gold medals listing, China would be on top.

  17. Man....you foreigners are obsessed with this c**p...

I think I speak for most when I say no one really gives a d**n! The Olympics is about sportsmanship and bringing the best athletes of the world together in a peaceful way.

  18. I thought the Olympics were for bringing countries together for the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship. Why are all you people obsessed with what kind and how many medals any country has won? I am sure the Olympic committee keeps track of every kind of medal that is won by country, which means that they always have the total medal count too.

  19. We used to be conceited, but now we're perfect.

  20. In proportion to their population they're performing poorly in comparison to countries like the UK and Australia.

  21. Delusional.

  22. You can't make generalizations that all 300 million Americans all think any one thing.  Most of us are guilty of national pride.  There are many ways to measure a "medal count."  Quit stereotyping.

  23. It's a newspaper.  The rest of the American population has no control over what a newspaper chooses to write about.

China has some fantastic athletes.  While some of them look very young to me despite the Chinese officials saying they are indeed of age to compete.  The other thing that bothers me is apparently it's a good thing to land on your knees according to the judges and have tons of other mistakes and still walk away with a medal in gymnastics.

Do I think that Americans are the best in everything, no.  I think we all have our strengths and weaknesses.  For example, I love to sew.  Am I the best at it, h**l no.  Something I could be the best at is falling UP a flight of stairs.  Anyone for a competition?  :)

Just like many of the other countries I have seen we have some great athletes and I don't see how it's a bad thing to want your country to win an event.

  24. I think most of us  (Americans) do not think we are the best in everything.  However, we have won far more medals per capita than most countries, including China with close to 1.4 billion population.  It's tough to defend being a proud American when our government puts us into such an unpopular position with the rest of the world.  Also, when you are in foreign countries and observe other American tourists, you understand the term "Ugly American."  Our national pride is no more than any other country's people but again, the measure of a nation's quality is how many want in and how many want out.

  25. Because they used to be the best and for so many years they were indeed the best. But now, China is in the equation. There are several ways to list down the countries in the medal tally, one showing the most golds on top and the other showing the country with the most no. of total medals.
