Why the World Trade Center?

Question

On 9/11, why was the World Trade Center targeted? A car bomb was exploded in the basement back in '96..this I remember but why is the WTC so significant?

Go get a copy of the 1988 movie "Working Girl" starring Melanie Griffith and Harrison Ford. Watch the beginning of the movie as Melanie's character travels by ferry from Saint George in Staten Island to lower Manhattan. Listen to Carly Simon singing on the sound track a song called "The New Jerusalem". Listen very carefully as the camera freeze frames on the twin towers of the World Trade Center and Carly is singing about the "quaking and shaking". Now, imagine you are an Islamist Hirabah (terrorist) sitting in a Beyit Al Shuhada (Martyrs' House) in Kandahar Afghanistan or even Jersey City New Jersey and you have just seen the opening scenes of that movie. If you don't take it as a sign from Allah, then you are not the whacked-out, nut job terrorist you claim to be.

BTW, when they show the movie on TV, they seem to edit out that freeze frame sequence.

Its the reason why there has not been a second attack. WTC is a tough act to follow.

The twin towers represented "power" and "Strength" to the world. Major people (Companies) did business with people from all over the world. Hitting the towers hurt many people from all over the world.

The WTC were targeted because they represented the Financial Hub of the U.S. Many companies were headquarted in the WTC, and the terrorist felt that toppling the WTC would cripple the U.S. economy. This is the same reason the Pentagon was attacked. The only difference is the Pentagon represents the military hub of the U.S. The fourth airplane was going after The Capitol or The White House which represents the government. The terrorist were trying to attack were it hurt us the most!

Terrorists tend to go for targets that are significant, or for targets that will get them the most time on the news, just think about how many times the footage has been aired on news stations since 2001.  Since the World Trade Center was the center of many finacial companies, and if I remeber right also where the UN had several offices it made it the kind of target that terrorist look for.

Many reasons. It was the center of much of America (and the worlds) business. Many major corporations were located within side of it.

It was a famous landmark which would bring shock value to the American people if destroyed.

It was easy to find from the air for inexperienced hijacking pilots.
