For over a week one crazy bird has spent time on and off almost all day flying at the window of our house. The bird is about 4-5''. The breast is yellowish-green, the back of head and back are more green. The wings and tail are close to gray, maybe brownish-gray. The head is proportional to the body, so it was pretty small and the bill is small and pointy. I live in South Wisconsin.

  1. It was probably looking for a mate , and thought the reflection in the window was another bird . The bird you may be thinking of could be a Great Crested Flycatcher.

  3. When birds do that, it's because it's their breeding season and they get very territorial. They believe that their reflection is another bird intruding into their territory, so they attack it.

The best thing to do is to put something over the window, so it won't be reflective. You can put paper or anything that is non-reflective over it. Some people use Christmas tinsel. You'll only have to do that for the time that they are breeding, which will probably be a couple of months.

    Hope that helps.

  4. As the other person has suggested, it may be simply mating season, or the bird being territorial. Placing something on your window can help, but no promises.

It may also be that the bird was a domestic at some point, and has mistaken your house for the house of its owner ( behavior seen with escaped parrots frequently). In that case, there is little you can do, other than show it that the window is solid and hope it wanders off.

As for species, without a picture I can't be sure, but it sounds like it might be a Goldfinch.
